America's Most Promising Social Entrepreneurs

We were just named a finalist in BusinessWeek's second annual roundup of America's Most Promising Social Entrepreneurs. It's an amazing honor to be alongside companies such as Organic Valley and Mission Measurement as we all strive towards a better world.

Voting for the top 5 companies is going on now and ends on June 26th. Please help us out by going to the vote page and voting for Hello Rewind.

Our photographer friend (and fellow officemate) Chris Lynch was kind enough to donate his services for our photo. You can check out his work and buy one of his screenprinted t-shirts at instilled images. Thanks, Chris!

Pre-Made Hello Rewind "Helbotica" Sleeves Just Released

IMG_6075 by you.

We have a thrilling new announcement. Hello Rewind is now offering already pre-made laptop sleeves. We know that some people are looking for a laptop sleeve immediately, so we've created a new line of sleeves from previously used tees into cases that can be purchased immediately without waiting for production time.

We are doing these as limited edition artist runs with the first batch currently available at Tekserve here in New York City. Look forward to more announcements of runs in the near future. We are looking to expand our retail program in the coming months.

About the design:
"Helbotica" is part of a series of typographic designs based on Jonathon
Yule’s favorite sans-serif fonts. You can learn more about his work at invdr.com.

Open call for artistic submissions expressing life in New York

A week ago we put out a call out for volunteer contributions to a special production line of Hello Rewind sleeve and received a lot of great interest!

Here is an expanded overview of what we are looking for.

Hello Rewind is now preparing to launch some limited edition lines of laptop sleeves with original New York City themed designs screen printed on them. Our vision is to create the coolest and most socially good laptop sleeves around that will celebrate life in New York. These sleeves will likely be sold at select retailers.

Artwork may be additionally featured in materials for Hello Rewind or Restore NYC, our partnering organization whose mission is to holistically rescue women out of sex-trafficking. Full artistic credit will be prominently given for all contributing creatives. We will regularly be sharing the coolest entries on our blog and twitter with links back to your portfolio page.

Creative requirements for submissions:

  • Urban expressions of life in New York. Maybe this focuses on neighborhoods, unique characteristics of the city, a skyline. It could be all type or could be all image. The final design has to have a visual read of being related to New York.
  • The tone of the work should lean more hopeful, aspirational and positive rather than depicting danger, struggles, or evil scaryness to be appropriate to the brand image for Hello Rewind and Restore NYC. If it's a really cool image that's neutral in tone, that's ok.
  • We prefer it to not look overly cliche and touristy so that it can appeal to people who actually live in New York.
  • No inclusion of other companies' intellectual properties. (As much as we love Spider-Man, we aren't going to pay for the licensing to feature him on a produced sleeve just yet.)
  • Final submissions should be pdfs with one or two-color designs on 8.5 x 11 (landscape or vertical). Vector art is preferred. Rasterized images (as high quality jpegs or pdfs) should be 300 dpi to be high quality enough for print silkscreening.  If you want to send us sketch concepts as jpegs for feedback, we'd love to see them!

Also, for you creatives who have a way with words...

  • We would love to be able to include short original poems, lyrics, or inspired phrases about urban life in New York that's hopeful, aspirational and positive. It can help to richen a visual concept or message about how life can be renewed in New York in pairing with a visual submission. (Maybe you are dreaming up the next theme song for New York like Jay Z's "Empire State of Mind"?)
  • We welcome appropriate short texts that may be treated visually into Hello Rewind artwork. Something that would be about 250 characters or less. (Something more substantive than a tweet!)

Deadlines:

  • We are looking to put quality designs into production as soon as possible. We will evaluate creative contributions on an ongoing basis.
  • We hope to get a first round of submissions by Sunday, May16th.
  • Email your submission and inquiries to art@hellorewind.com.

We look forward to seeing and sharing your submissions!

Summer Fellowship

Our amazing intern Crystal is graduating and leaving New York City in May. We're extremely sad to lose her, but that means we're on the lookout for her replacement!

This April, we're interviewing for a summer Fellowship position. You'll work directly with the Hello Rewind team this summer in growing the business and helping the sex trafficking survivors we support. We also provide a stipend to help support living costs in NYC. If you're interested (or know someone who might be!) please follow this link to learn more and apply.

http://hellorewind.com/fellowship/

*Special Note: For the summer Fellowship position, we can only accept female applicants. Both male and female volunteers help out with Hello Rewind, but because of the nature of the work, we cannot have males working directly with the female sex trafficking survivors (and the Fellow will work hands-on with the women in Queens). For males who want to help out, please send us an e-mail and we can figure out a way to use you! :)

Stomach Turning Sex Trafficking Stats

Online Schools has organized some harrowing stats on prostitution, and lo and behold: the demand for paid sex fuels the demand for human trafficking. Big surprise. 2.5 million people are currently being trafficked. $58 billion dollars is the annual take for the cowards behind the curtain. Sometimes things feel so helpless even when there are tons of people trying to fight this (Restore NYC, The Blind Project, et al).

Providing economic opportunity for victims is what Hello Rewind is all about. But we'd give anything to see a day when there were no more new victims to support.

The Good Capitalist Party

Monday marked the first annual SXSW Good Capitalist party. We were honored to sponsor this celebration of social entrepreneurship in conjunction with Martin Montero and our friends at Changemakers, Acumen Fund, Skoll Foundation, Social Capital Markets, and Kiva (among many other wonderful organizations)!

We met some great people and had a fabulous time talking about how each of us is trying to change the world. If you were there and didn't get to say hi, please do find us through our blog, email, Facebook, Twitter, or any of the other ways we're online. And join our mailing list to stay in touch.

If you're even thinking about SXSW 2011, plan on coming next year!
